Created Release: Kinect for Windows 1.6 service source code fix (Nov 07, 2012)

The Kinect for Windows 1.6 release includes changes that prevent compiling the Kinect service without errors.

The Kinect for Windows 1.6 Runtime is 100% compatible with RDS4. This is only needed if you wish to compile your own version of the service.

If you install Kinect for Windows 1.6 and you want to compile your own (User) version of the service they replace the Kinect.cs file in your samples/sensors/Kinect/Kinect folder with this one.

Remember that if you do build the service, you are building the "User" version of the service (has "(User)" in the name) and any manifests will also need to use the User version of this service and any service that partners with it will also need to be the User version. User versions of the sample manifests are provided in the samples/config directory (ones with .user. in the name).

This ZIP file contains the RDS Visual Studio 2010 Templates for RDS4.
If the templates did not install correctly for you, then you can unzip the contents of this file into your My Documents \ Visual Studio 2010 folder.
NOTE: The most common reason why the RDS templates do not work is that your Visual Studio template settings are pointing to the wrong folder.

This ZIP file contains another ZIP. That is correct because it is how templates are distributed. You should unzip the contents into the folder as specified above.

Background

RDS 4 Beta was released on 17th September 2011 and worked with the Kinect for Windows SDK Beta.
On the 4th November 2011, the Kinect SDK was updated to Kinect for Windows SDK Beta 2. This new SDK contained some breaking changes which meant that the Kinect-related services in RDS stopped working.

This package is a fix for RDS 4 Beta when used in conjunction with Kinect for Windows SDK Beta 2.
Do not install this fix unless:
You installed RDS 4 Beta after 4th November 2011 and also downloaded and installed Kinect for Windows SDK Beta 2;
or
You had RDS 4 Beta installed with Kinect for Windows SDK Beta and then upgraded to Kinect for Windows SDK Beta 2.

If you have RDS 4 Beta installed with the original Kinect for Windows SDK Beta you might prefer to wait until the next release of RDS which will support Kinect for Windows SDK Beta 2.

This package only updates the User samples that are supplied with RDS. You must re-compile these samples.

Instructions

To install this package:

Download the ZIP file
Unzip into the top-level folder of your RDS installation. (This is typically C:\Users\<username>\Microsoft Robotics Dev Studio 4 Beta)
Run KinectFix.exe. This is a self-expanding executable (a DssDeploy package) that will place some new files on your system.
When the package installation completes, please follow the instructions that are displayed in the ReadMe page. This page is also saved into the samples\Sensors\Kinect folder so you can refer to it later.

NOTE: You must run the BuildAllSamples script after installing this package to rebuild the User samples.
